World War 1
World War I, often abbreviated as WWI or WW1, began on July 28, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918. Called the "Great War" by contemporary people, the warlike people included many of Europe, Russia, the United States, and Turkey. , Combat has spread to parts of the Middle East, Africa and Asia. It is one of the deadliest conflicts in history, an estimated 9 million people were killed in combat and more than 5 million civilians died from occupation, bombing, hunger, or illness. As a result of the genocide in the Ottoman Empire and the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, the movement of combatants during the war killed millions.
Outbreak of the war
By 1914, the major European nations were divided into the Triple Entente of France, Russia and the United Kingdom, and the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. Tensions on the Balkans increased on June 28, 1914, after the Bosnian Serbian Gavlilo Principe assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The blame for Austria and Hungary Serbia caused a crisis in July. This was a failure in an attempt to avoid conflict through diplomacy. When the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared a war with Serbia on July 28, Russia came to defense, and on August 4, the German, French, and British alliance systems moved with their respective empires. In November, the Ottoman Empire, Germany and Austria formed the Central Powers of World War, and in April 1915 Italy joined the United Kingdom, France, Russia and Serbia as allies.
In the face of the two-front war, Germany's strategy in 1914 was to first defeat France and then move its troops east to eliminate Russia, commonly known as Schlieffen Plan. Their advance into France failed, and by late 1914, a continuous line of trenches extending from the English Channel to Switzerland faced each other along the Western Front, but remained largely unchanged until 1917.
Due to a bottleneck caused by the Allied blockade of the Navy, Germany launched a full-scale submarine war in early 1917, and the previously neutral United States participated in the war on April 6, 1917. In Russia, the Bolsheviks seized power during the October 1917 revolution and settled in March 1918. The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk has released a large number of German troops.
End of the war
Towards the cease of 1918, the Central Powers started to collapse; Bulgaria signed an Armistice on 29 September, accompanied through the Ottomans on 31 October, then Austria-Hungary on three November. Isolated, dealing with revolution at domestic and an navy at the verge of mutiny, Kaiser Wilhelm abdicated on nine November and the brand new German authorities signed the Armistice of 11 november 1918, bringing the combating to a close. The 1919 Paris Peace Conference imposed diverse settlements at the defeated powers, the first-rate regarded being the Treaty of Versailles. The dissolution of the Russian, German, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires brought about severa uprisings and the introduction of unbiased states, together with Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia.
