The NUN aka VALAK (Conjuring Universe) - ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW !
Who is this NUN ?
Valak, aka the NUN, is a fictional character, serving as the main antagonist of the Conjuring universe. It is often referred as the 'marquis of snakes' and 'the defiler. In fact, the character is based on demonology, where Valac (Valak) is known as the Great President of Hell, with over 30 legions of demons at his command.Other ways to spell Valak's name include "Valac", "Ualac", "Valax", "Valu", "Valic", and "Volac". It in fact, was once an angel. But, the nun isn't the original form of Valak. Valak manifests as an angelically winged boy riding a two-headed dragon (below picture). Let us now see about the Valak in the conjuring universe.
Story
Past
In ancient times, Valak was once a heavenly angel who served God. However, a fellow angel named Lucifer rebelled against God and gathered other angels as his followers, including Valak. After the rebellion, Lucifer, Valak and the other angels were expelled from heaven. Lucifer became Satan, and Valak and the other defeated angels became demons. In doing so, Valak was not only stripped of his angel status, but also stripped of his special angelic powers. After becoming a demon, it looked like in the picture shown below( as revealed in Nun II).
The demon had taken the form of a nun as a means of blending with the other nuns as well as to mock their faith. Thus, Valak would take a form that highlights its supreme power and attacks the religious symbols that relates to god.
Origin
In the film 'The Nun I' it is revealed that the Carta Monastery was built by a duke somewhere in Romania centuries ago. The Duke is obsessed with black magic and Satanism, so he attempts to summon a demonic being from the catacombs, but is killed by members of the Vatican, and the rift is sealed with the blood of Christ. Hundreds of years later, during World War II, the monastery was heavily bombed and the same Valak was released from its captivity. For many years, the nuns constantly prayed in groups, just to keep the evil from escaping. But Valak, disguised a nun, roamed freely through the monastery every night, mocking their faith. So the nuns were forced to pray to fight the demon.
In 1952, Valak had slayed several of the nuns, leaving only two survivors. Also, again it killed one of the last two survivors. Sister Victoria, the last survivor, commits suicide in order to prevent Valak from claiming her as a host. Shortly after her death, the Vatican tasks Father Burke and Sister Irene to investigate the murder. Valak appears throughout the film, creating a mass illusion with the ghosts of murdered nuns, weakening Sister Irene, and tormenting Father Burke by taking the form of a boy who died during an failed exorcism, performed by Father Burke. Valack then buries Father Burke alive before tricking Sister Irene into possessing her. When the catacombs began to flood, Valak attempted to strangle Sister Irene. But Sister Irene spat Christ's blood on Valak, causing it to almost die. Then the gap from which valak came, is closed again. However, this was not the end for the demon nun. When the group leaves, it is revealed that Frenchie aka Maurice, a French-Canadian, has an inverted cross scar on his neck (meaning, valak had possesed him).
The Re-rise of Valak
As shown in the film 'Nun II', Valak returns with a vengeance against Sister Irene. Using Maurice as a pawn, Valak tormented a catholic boarding school in search of a lost ancient relic known as 'The Eyes of Saint Lucy'. Upon finding out what the demon was after, Sister Irene found the relic and took it up. But Valak who was possessing Maurice attacked Irene and took the relic. Upon obtaining the relic, Valak now has access to its full potential again. However, through deep belief and conviction, Sister Irene and her new nun apprentice (Debra) were able to wash Valak in wine turned into Christ’s blood, and set him on fire. They also freed Maurice from Valak’s possession in the process. It is currently unknown if Valak was sent back to Hell or not, but it was highly unlikely since years later, Valak would be eventually outed by Ed and Lorraine Warren in the film 'Conjuring 2'.
The Fall of Valak
In the film Conjuring 2, it is revealed that the Nun was banished back to hell by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren after the demon had tormented the Hodgson family.
Conclusion
So far, a clear ending of Valak has been given in the films but the clear orgin and other happenings haven't been revealed yet. We may have movies based on Valak in the future.
