The September 11 attacks, commonly known as 9/11, were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks on the United States by the militant Islamic extremist network Al Qaeda lead by Osama Bin-Laden

On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked four airliners during a flight from the northeastern United States to California. The attackers were organized into three groups of five members and one group of four, each group containing a designated flight-trained hijacker to control the aircraft. Their goal was to crash the plane into a prominent American building, causing massive casualties and major structural damage. Hijackers crashed the first two into the North Tower and South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, and the third into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane was to target a government building in Washington, D.C. Hit, but instead crashed in a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania

The first plane to reach the goal was American Airlines Flight 11. It crashed at 8:46 am in the North Tower of the World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan. 17 minutes later, at 9:03 am, United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Both 110-story towers collapsed within 1 hour and 42 minutes.

The attack killed 2,977 people, injured more than 25,000, caused serious long-term health hazards, and caused at least $ 10 billion in infrastructure and property damage. It is the most deadly terrorist attack in human history and continues to be the most deadly single incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in US history.
